Are Flies Flying Before Your Eyes?

This situation, which is mostly ignored, can be a sign of some eye diseases. It draws attention to the need to consult an ophthalmologist, especially when flies are flying before the eyes together with flashes of light.

Beware If It Appears Suddenly!

Almost all of us have experienced the feeling of flies flying before our eyes while reading a book or looking at a bright environment. This situation, which is mostly ignored, can actually be a sign of some eye diseases. He draws attention to the need to consult an ophthalmologist, especially when flies are flying before the eyes together with flashes of light.

One of the problems that arise due to the structural changes in the eye due to aging is seeing flies flying or black spots in the eye. These spots or worm-shaped visuals, which increase when looking at a plain white or blue sky, often move in the direction of the gaze. This problem, which is mostly seen after the age of 50, is frequently observed.

Yeditepe University Specialized Hospital Ophthalmologists underline the need to consult an ophthalmologist for a definitive diagnosis, pointing out that seeing flies flying before the eyes or black spots can also be a sign of an important eye disease such as a retinal tear.

The Most Important Factor Is Aging

The substance called “the vitreus,” which is located between the retina and the lens in the eye starts to shrink over time by separating from the retina with age. When the middle ages are reached, the changes in the gel-like structure inside the eye draw attention. Unfortunately, this substance cannot renew itself over time. With advancing age, the structure of the vitreus deteriorates, and its gel structure becomes liquid and fibrous.

He states, “Since the problem may be associated with tearing, bleeding, or splitting in the retina at a ratio of 15 percent, it should be taken seriously when it starts suddenly. A detailed retinal examination should be performed.” However, this can occur at an earlier age, especially in myopia, in people who have had an infection or surgery.

The Patient's Condition Determines the Treatment Decision

“If there is no problem in the retina, in general, these black spots will shrink over time and become unattractive to the person. Therefore, no treatment is usually required. If it bothers the person excessively or if it is too much and reduces vision, it can be treated. In this case, vitreus fibers in a certain position and size can be destroyed by the method we call "vitriolizes" with Yag laser, or the vitreus gel and the formations in it can be completely removed from the eye with a surgery called vitrectomy. Patients mustn't trust the drops and herbal medicines they find on the internet without being examined.”
